GGS Sustainability Symposium: Workshop on "Sustainability Transitions Towards a Future Bioeconomy: Case Studies from the Construction Sector"

November 27, 2023

Giessen, Germany

Dr. Sebastian Losacker and Tim Becker held a workshop on 'Sustainability Transitions Towards a Future Bioeconomy: Case Studies From the Construction Sector' as part of the sustainability workshop organized by the Giessen Graduate Centre for Social Sciences, Economics and Law (GGS).

The workshop offered participants an in-depth insight into the concepts and potential of the bioeconomy in the context of sustainable regional development. Using case studies and practical examples from the construction sector, participants were encouraged to understand the connections between the economy, environment and society and to develop strategies for a sustainable bioeconomy. The bioeconomy holds enormous potential for transforming the construction sector, which causes considerable problems for the climate and the environment, for example through the use of environmentally harmful materials such as cement, steel and sand. Both simple bio-based products (e.g. timber construction, natural insulation materials) and technological innovations (e.g. wood mycelium, bioplastics) are already on the market. Nevertheless, the transformation process is slower than necessary - why is that? Answers to this question were sought together in the workshop.
