First meeting: GEIST – Geographies of Economic Ideation and Spatial Transformation

On 30–31 July 2026, Dr. Sebastian Losacker participated in the first meeting of the DFG-funded network GEIST – Geographies of Economic Ideation and Spatial Transformation, hosted by the BTU Cottbus–Senftenberg.
The two-day meeting focused on in-depth discussions of the current state of research on ideas, ideation, and their significance for processes of spatial transformation. Participants also explored a wide range of perspectives on the future development of geographical research on ideas and ideation.
A particular highlight of the meeting was the keynote lecture by Jamie Peck on the geographical political economy of ideas. He demonstrated how geography can contribute to understanding ideation as a key driver of economic and spatial transformation.
The DFG network is funded for a period of two and a half years. During this time, several additional network meetings are planned, with the next meeting scheduled to take place in Berlin.
