Charlotte Lobensteiner and Dr. Sebastian Losacker have published their new article, “Exploring discourses in the German forest-based bioeconomy: A Q-methodological approach,” in the journal Forest Policy and Economics.
In the article, the researchers examine how actors in the forest sector perceive the societal discourse surrounding the bioeconomy, particularly with regard to an increased use of timber in the construction sector. The study is based on a Q-method study conducted in Bavaria.
Using Q-methodology, the researchers identified three central viewpoints within the discourse: 1. The bioeconomy is essential for the future of our society! 2. Climate and environmental protection over economic growth! 3. Wood is the building material of the future!
These viewpoints show that there is not one single understanding of what the forest-based bioeconomy should look like. While stakeholders broadly agree on the need to reduce the use of fossil resources and recognize wood as an important alternative to carbon-intensive construction materials, they differ when it comes to implementation, priorities, and the role of economic growth, environmental protection, and forest use. Illustrating the different actor viewpoints is important because the bioeconomy transition is often discussed as a (simple) shift from fossil to biogenic resources. The findings suggest that it should also be understood as a (complex) societal process shaped by different values, expectations, and concerns.
