Symposium “Future of Economic Geography” in Hanover

In April 2026, the symposium “Future of Economic Geography” was held at the Leibnizhaus in Hanover. Dr. Sebastian Losacker participated in a panel discussion that addressed the scientific objectives of economic geography and explored strategic responses to current challenges and opportunities facing the discipline.

In a keynote session, Prof. Tom Brökel, Prof. Martina Fuchs, Prof. Johannes Glückler, and Prof. Robert Hassink presented key perspectives on the discipline’s scientific goals, future methodological developments, and strategic approaches to ongoing transformations within economic geography and related fields.

In the subsequent panel discussion, Dr. Sebastian Losacker joined Prof. Sina Hardaker, Prof. Christian Hundt, Prof. Ivo Mossig, Prof. Hans-Martin Zademach, and members of the audience in reflecting on and responding to the theses presented. The discussion was moderated by Prof. Matthias Kiese. The main outcomes of the symposium are expected to be published in a special issue of a leading academic journal in the field.

The event concluded with a laudatory speech by Prof. Johannes Glückler, followed by the presentation “A Boomer’s Retrospective – 40 Years as an economic geographer” by the host, Prof. Rolf Sternberg, who marked the occasion of his retirement.
